Don't like dressing up? These 7 low-effort looks will save you this Halloween

If the thought of dressing up for Halloween fills you with dread, way more than a horror show does — then, this one’s especially for you.

We get it — with busy lives and evolving expectations, many folks no longer want to spend hours at a stretch deciding on and devising Halloween outfits. Nor do many people have the privilege to budget for costly Halloween costumes. They’d rather “work with what they’ve got.”

These days, more people are looking for easy, “minimal‐effort” Halloween costumes that require little shopping, simple wardrobe tweaks, or creative use of what they already have. And if you’re the kind of person who is more inclined to low-effort dressing anyway, but still have waited for the last minute to zero down on a look — we’ve got your back! You can still join the fun without the stress, and in a simple dress (with some quirky elements to it, of course!).

We’ve pulled together a hands-on guide to help you breeze into Halloween mode with ease — from slipping into a plain outfit with a clever accessory to turning a basic T-shirt into a punny statement piece, the options are surprisingly simple, yet fun!

2/8

The quintessential ghost — in a sheet

One of the all-time easiest and favorite costumes: simply take a white sheet, cut out two eye-holes, drape it over yourself, and you’re done. It’s not flashy, but it’s always on theme. The beauty of the ghost look lies in its extreme simplicity and recognizability.

Why it works: It takes no special skills and is extremely low in cost — and yet, it manages to earn instant recognition!

Pro tip: Use a lightweight sheet so you won’t trip. Add boots or sneakers underneath. Maybe add a chain prop or carry a lantern for extra effect.

3/8

The black cat (cat woman)

To pull off this look, you’ll need nothing beyond an all-black outfit (a pair of leggings or black pants and a black top), a headband with cat ears, and a little eyeliner to draw whiskers and a nose — that’s all! No wonder this one is one of the easiest and most popular go-to last-minute options for a zero-effort Halloween!

Why it works: Here, comfort meets recognizability. You’ll feel good and look festive without much effort.

Pro tip: If you already have a plain black outfit, the ears and whiskers cost nearly nothing and can be reused for future occasions.

4/8

The tourist — on a holiday

Who doesn’t like a holiday, right? Pulling off this look means digging into your closet for a Hawaiian or loud shirt, sunglasses, a camera around your neck (or phone hanging), and maybe socks with sandals for humor. It’s easy, it’s DIY, and it’s refreshing — it’s one of the best low-effort Halloween costumes you can make at home, for when you don’t want to dress up in full costume mode.

Why it works: Think comfortable and funny in one place, and you’ll likely have many items in the basket already.

Pro tip: Maybe add a map or travel-guide prop. Optionally, you can stick a fanny pack on for the full look as well.

5/8

The scarecrow

What gives fall and Halloween together? The scarecrow — a classic fall look that’s surprisingly simple, yet on theme for Halloween! Just wear a plaid shirt, jeans or overalls, slip on a straw hat, tuck some straw or raffia into your collar or boots, and add light face-paint to mimic stitched-up patches. You’ve got to get crafty a bit, but who doesn’t like a little DIY hour!

Why it works: It blends into autumn themes while still being fun and recognizable.

Pro tip: Choose comfortable clothes (you may be outside). Additionally, face paint should be minimal yet visible under lights.

6/8

The Grim Reaper

Want spooky but without the full horror makeup? Grab a black hoodie or robe, craft a simple cardboard scythe, and add subtle face-paint (or you can skip it if you’re in no mood) — and there, you turned yourself into the Grim Reaper!

Why it works: You get the vibe of Halloween without overly complicated accessories.

Pro tip: Because your character’s got to move around a bit, choose a pair of good and comfortable footwear (you’ll probably move around). The scythe prop can be light cardboard and painted silver.

7/8

Rosie the Riveter

Another classic that has become a cultural phenomenon — Rosie the Riveter! This one’s an empowering and classic look that is super-easy to assemble with items you may already have at home. The core components include a denim outfit, a red bandana, and a confident "We Can Do It!" attitude. Pair your denim (or sturdy cotton button-down) shirt — with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows — with a pair of wide-legged jeans or sturdy cotton work pants! Finish it off with the cult classic bandana, preferably with polka dots — and you’re already “doin' it”!

Why it works: A strong woman owning up to her power — in a fashionable way! What could be more iconic than this!

Pro tip: You can go with a dark blue shirt if you can’t manage a denim shirt, you can wear a jumpsuit as well! But get the bandana right — red with white polka dots!

8/8

Wednesday Addams

What could be more on theme for a Halloween party! Take out your black outfits — preferably, a two-piece — put it on and you’re halfway there. Paint your lips in a dark shade of lipstick, add some kohl to your eyes, and wear your hair in those signature braids! Oh, and get your black “weird dancing” shoes on!

Why it works: It’s pop culture meets Halloween vibes! If costume parties are the rave, why not turn up as someone who always understands the assignment of dread!

Pro tip: In case you prefer a dress, pick one with a defined silhouette! And don’t forget those Mary Jane shoes!
