5 ways to spot fake zari (and save yourself from getting duped)

Zari, the shimmering thread that adds richness to sarees and fabrics, is often faked with plastic or cheap metallic substitutes. Real zari is made of fine silver or gold threads and can last for generations. But with so many lookalikes in the market, it’s easy to get fooled. Here are 5 smart ways to identify fake zari so you can invest wisely, wear proudly, and avoid being tricked by glittery imitations.

2/6

The rub test

One of the easiest ways to spot fake zari is by rubbing it gently between your fingers. Authentic zari, which is made with real silver or gold plating over silk or cotton, has a smooth, rich texture and doesn’t flake or fade. On the other hand, fake zari is often coated with plastic or poor-quality metal that flakes off easily. If rubbing reveals a reddish, greenish, or dull grey base beneath the gold surface, it’s fake. Real zari retains its shine even with frequent handling. This simple test gives instant clues without damaging your fabric.

3/6

The burn test

This method requires care but reveals the truth fast. Take a small zari thread, preferably from the edge or an extra swatch, and burn it. Real zari, made with silver or gold and wrapped over a cotton/silk core, doesn’t catch fire easily and turns into fine grey ash. In contrast, fake zari made of plastic or synthetic material will curl, melt, and give off a sharp, unpleasant plastic odor. The burn test should never be done on the main fabric, and always with caution. It’s a last-resort test, but often the most telling.

4/6

Observe the finish

Real zari has a quiet elegance. It reflects light gently and has a fine, smooth finish that doesn't snag or feel coarse. When you look closely, you’ll notice a consistency and refinement; it drapes well, feels soft, and shines with grace. Fake zari often looks overly shiny, yellowish, or brassy, trying too hard to impress. It may feel stiff, rough, or even cheap to the touch. Over time, fake zari starts to peel, fade, or break, a big red flag. Always trust your eyes and fingers; real zari speaks in understated luxury.

5/6

Price check

Zari made with real silver or gold components is expensive because of the craftsmanship and materials involved. If you see a heavily embroidered saree priced much lower than expected, that’s your first clue. Real zari work commands a premium and is usually seen in high-end bridal or heritage collections. If the price feels too good to be true, it probably is. Compare prices from reputed stores and always ask for details about the zari quality. A genuine seller will be transparent about the materials used. Don’t let low prices tempt you into buying fake sparkles.

6/6

The thread test

Want to be absolutely sure? Snip a tiny length of zari and pull it apart slowly. Real zari is made by wrapping fine silver or gold wire over a silk or cotton thread, giving it strength and durability. When you unravel it, you’ll find this textile core at the center. Fake zari, in contrast, will have a plastic or synthetic thread base, often shiny, stretchy, or coarse. This small detail has a big impact, real zari weaves are breathable, long-lasting, and feel regal. One thread can reveal the truth of your entire garment.
