Photos: Day 1 of Dream Diamonds Delhi Times Fashion Week

A SHIMMERING START: The Dream Diamonds Delhi Times Fashion Week kickstarted on Saturday with designer Suneet Varma’s show, which saw models shimmy down the runway to songs from the ’70s. A contest ‘Binge & Chill’ is running on Dream Diamonds DTFW’s radio partner Ishq 104.8 FM, where one can participate to win exclusive passes for the event and gift hampers from Lakmé Salon. Scroll through for more of Day 1 of the fashion week:

Suneet Varma: A show with shimmer

The event, which is being held at Roseate House, Aerocity, had designer Suneet Varma showcasing his couture collection on Day 1. From pearl-embroidered lehengas and saris to shararas and contemporary sequined crop tops and skirts, the collection had a variety of designs. He said, “We presented our spring collection, which has lots of hand embroidery and silhouettes. The jewellery, crowns and headgear on the ramp were hand-made.” Talking about his association with Dream Diamonds DTFW, Suneet added, “My association with Delhi Times has been probably for over two and a half decades. My career, to a large extent, has been encapsulated by the newspaper, so for me it is really exciting to associate with this fashion week.”

Christine Storm: A show with a message

With tango dancers, a live music performance by the designer herself and models shaking a leg on the ramp, Christine Storm’s show had just the right amount of drama. The US-based designer showcased her collection that came with a message on recycling. She said, “The collection is extremely important to me. Repurposing (or recycling) clothes is the rage right now.” The peacock motif was recurrent in her designs and Christine said that the motif represented her alliance with India. “We have friends here and I have always been fascinated with peacocks, so I incorporated that in the collection,” she said.

Niki Mahajan: In keeping with tradition

Presented by Orient Electric, Niki Mahajan’s collection was perfect for the bridal trousseau. The collection, titled Yuvrani, was inspired by a young princess. It was dominated by shades like peach, white and mint green. The designer experimented with embroidery. “There was a lot of mokaishand chikankari. I developed embroidery from polki jewellery, and that was the first part of the collection showcased. Then came designs with mokaish. Each garment had very intricate embroidery,” said Niki.

Anand Bhushan: Spring shades on the ramp

Designer Anand Bhushan, presented by Prayag India, showcased his collection of evening wear for spring-summer, which was all about whites and pastel shades. Pants and tops in metallic shades added a bit of shimmer to an otherwise subtle collection. Bhushan said, “This collection was from our Spring-Summer 2018 line which takes inspiration from the flora and fauna of northern Italy. I work with progressive textures and that was visible in the show.” The designer added, “I have grown up reading Delhi Times, so it was a great experience working for this show. When I was asked to do the show, I agreed immediately as it is the best way to connect with people.”

LAKMÉ SALON LOOK OF THE DAY

<p>This standout ensemble worn by Sonalika Sahay from Suneet Varma’s show encapsulated what his collection was all about – complete ‘looks’ rather than just outfits. The handmade headgear – a statement paasa – is paired perfectly with the softpink embellished lehenga. </p><p>"Our experts co-created trend-setting looks with leading designers. We will take these trends to our customers in the 30 Lakmé salons across NCR.'' – Pushkaraj Shenai, CEO, Lakmé Lever<br></p>
