If you have an oval face, consider yourself lucky. This face shape features balanced proportions with a gently rounded jawline and slightly wider cheekbones, so it is naturally suited to almost every earring style.

“Oval faces have the most flexibility,” explained Blake. “You can experiment with bold statement pieces, delicate studs, dramatic chandelier drops or sleek huggies. The trick is to use this versatility to express your personal style rather than feeling restricted.”

That said, medium-length drops and hoops tend to be particularly flattering as they maintain the face's natural harmony without overwhelming it.

A 2026 arXiv study claimed, “Results support the hypothesis that averageness in facial proportions correlates with higher perceived attractiveness.” This supports the principle that balanced proportions are perceived as more attractive, which aligns with your advice that earrings should “balance and enhance rather than fight” facial features.

Round faces: Embrace length and angles

Round faces are characterised by soft curves, full cheeks and similar width and length measurements. The goal here is to create the illusion of length and add definition.

Elongated drops, linear designs and vertical silhouettes work beautifully by drawing the eye downward and visually lengthening the face. Teardrop shapes, long dangles and slim rectangular styles all help sharpen soft curves.

According to a recent 2026 study published in the journal Progress in Orthodontics, “Facial shape was significantly associated with attractiveness ratings… higher attractiveness was linked to well-balanced vertical facial proportions and a more angular facial appearance.” This directly backs the idea that proportion and structure matter in how faces are perceived, which reinforces that earrings can visually balance, elongate or soften facial features.

“Angular and geometric designs are your friend,” said Blake. “Think sleek lines rather than circles. Avoid button studs and wide hoops that can emphasize roundness.”

Heart-shaped faces: Balance the chin

Heart-shaped faces feature a wider forehead and cheekbones with a narrower, often pointed chin. The trick is to add visual weight to the lower portion of the face.

Earrings with wider bases are ideal. Teardrop designs, triangular drops and chandelier styles that flare outward at the bottom all help balance a narrower chin with broader upper features.

“The wider part of the earring should sit at or below the jawline,” Blake advised. “This creates equilibrium between your forehead and chin, making the whole face appear more proportionate.”

Avoid top-heavy designs or anything that adds more width at cheekbone level.

Square faces: Soften strong lines

Square faces are defined by a strong, angular jawline and forehead of similar width. The aim is to soften these bold angles with curves and movement.

Rounded hoops, oval shapes and any design with soft, flowing lines will complement rather than compete with your bone structure. Circular studs, curved drops and teardrop shapes all work beautifully.

“Square faces have such striking, sculptural beauty,” said Blake. “Soft, rounded earring shapes provide contrast that highlights your strong features without making them appear harsh.”

Steer clear of geometric, angular designs or square-shaped earrings that can make the jawline appear even more severe.

Long faces: Add width, not length

Long faces have greater length than width, often with a high forehead and elongated chin. Here, the strategy is to add horizontal interest rather than vertical lines.

Studs, clustered designs and medium-sized hoops are your go-to styles. Button earrings, circular shapes and wider styles that sit close to the earlobe all help create the illusion of width.

“You want to avoid anything that will make your face appear even longer,” Blake explained. “Skip the long dangles and opt for designs that draw attention outward rather than downward.”

He advised, “When choosing earrings, start by identifying your face shape. Pull your hair back and trace your face outline in a mirror, or take a straight-on photo. Once you know your shape, you can shop with purpose rather than impulse. That said, these are guidelines, not rules. If you love a particular style, wear it with confidence. Personal style always trumps rigid formulas. Quality matters too. Well-crafted earrings sit properly and move beautifully, which affects how they complement your face. Look for pieces with good weight distribution and secure fastenings.”

Finally, consider your lifestyle. The most flattering earrings in the world will not work if they are uncomfortable or impractical for your daily routine. Find the sweet spot between what suits you and what you will actually wear.
