5 iconic jewellery pieces passed down from Princess Diana to Meghan Markle

The blue blood comes with a lot of perks and a closet full of gemstones is definitely one of them. As is the tradition with families, mothers typically share their valuable jewels with their daughters and daughters-in-law. Princess Diana, the first wife of Charles III, loved herself some lustrous pearls and sparkling sapphires. The late Princess of Wales divided her jewellery among her sons in her will, with the intention of their wives wearing it in the future. Thus, both Kate and Meghan inherited a set of jewelled pieces from their mother-in-law. Here are 5 stunning ones that were passed down from Princess Diana to Meghan Markle.

2/7

Asprey Aquamarine ring

Informally known as Princess Diana's divorce ring, this ring was spotted on Markle's finger on her wedding day back in 2018. For an evening reception at Frogmore House, the newlywed donned a white halter-neck gown and added the "something blue" to her finger. The aquamarine gemstone at the centre of the ring was gifted to the People's Princess Diana by Lucia Flecha de Lima and later turned into a ring by Asprey in 1996.

3/7

Butterfly earrings

In the 1980s, Princess Diana was often seen wearing a gold butterfly necklace with matching earrings. Now, Markle is often spotted wearing the gold, diamond and likely sapphire studs. She first wore them during the couple's royal visit to Australia and again in 2024 during their visit to Colombia.

4/7

Cartier Tank watch

Princess Diana's Cartier Tank watch has been one of her most iconic pieces. However, she had another variant for more special occasions. It was the Cartier Tank Francaise, now often sported on Markle's wrist.

5/7

Diamond Cross necklace

In 2024, the Duke of Sussex gifted the Duchess another one of his mother's heirlooms, a diamond cross necklace. Markle donned the piece during their trip to Nigeria for the Invictus Games, serving as a memento for the time the Princess had herself visited the country alongside Prince Charles in 1990.

6/7

Diamond Tennis bracelet

Another one of Princess Diana's jewelled possessions that was passed down to Markle includes Cartier's Diamond Tennis bracelet. The Duchess wore it during her and Harry's royal visit to Fiji in 2018. Another interesting part about the bracelet, is that for his proposal to Markle in 2017, the Duke took one central, cushion-cut diamond and two smaller diamonds from this tennis bracelet. These were used to make the three-stone ring she was seen wearing on their wedding day.

7/7

Jewellery as a statement

Be it Kate or Meghan, both have ensured donning a piece of their beloved late mother-in-law's jewellery during memorable occasions in their life. From her wedding day to the couple's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey and the Time100 Summit, Meghan has carried forward Diana's jewelled possessions with her.
