Met Gala 2026: Sportswomen bring power dressing to the red carpet

The steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art usually belong to Hollywood royalty. But Monday night told a completely different story. Professional athletes took over the 2026 Met Gala red carpet in a big way.

With the theme “Fashion Is Art” tied to the “Costume Art” exhibit, these sports stars didn’t just show up - they delivered full-blown fashion moments. The blend of athletic culture and high fashion has been building for years, and this time, it truly took centre stage.

2/6

Venus Williams

She knows exactly how to own a room. Returning as a co-chair this year—a role her sister Serena Williams once held—Venus didn’t hold back.

Walking the carpet with her husband Andrea Preti, she wore a black strapless gown covered in shimmer. But what really stood out was her styling. Instead of traditional jewellery, she wore a bold Swarovski breastplate that turned the look into something sculptural.

With a soft rosette updo balancing the strong metallic detail, the whole look felt like a mix of power and elegance.

3/6

Naomi Osaka

If there’s one thing Naomi Osaka does well, it’s pushing boundaries.

For the Met Gala, she went full avant-garde in a runway look by Robert Wun. The white gown featured dramatic sculpted shoulders, paired with a wide, statement hat.

Both pieces were detailed with bright red feathers that looked almost like abstract flowers. She finished the look with sheer red gloves tipped with sharp black claws.

It was bold, slightly dramatic, and impossible to ignore.

4/6

A’ja Wilson

The WNBA tunnel walk has quietly become a fashion moment of its own—and A’ja Wilson brought that same energy to the Met Gala.

Making her debut while serving on the host committee, the Las Vegas Aces star went for a full gold goddess vibe. She wore an off-shoulder gown with cape sleeves that flowed into long, dramatic trains.

Stacked gold chokers and a sleek honey-blonde hairstyle tied everything together. It felt powerful, confident, and very intentional.

5/6

Lindsey Vonn

Some looks go beyond fashion - and this was one of them. Lindsey Vonn wore a custom Thom Browne one-shoulder gown in white and silver, detailed with heavy beading and a tulle hem inspired by classical sculptures.

But the most meaningful part of her look was her cane. After a serious leg injury at the February Olympics, this was her first public appearance without crutches. The custom black cane, designed to match her outfit, became a symbol of strength and recovery.

6/6

Alysa Liu

Alysa Liu made her Met Gala debut with a major announcement—she’s the newest ambassador for Louis Vuitton.

She arrived in a striking red strapless gown with a voluminous tulle skirt that created a dramatic high-low effect. Burgundy velvet heels peeked through as she moved, adding a classic touch.

She kept her signature striped hair and added diamond jewellery for extra shine. The look felt fresh, bold, and perfectly in sync with her moment.

From powerful silhouettes to deeply personal statements, these athletes didn’t just attend the Met Gala - they redefined it.
