Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’ look decoded

In a period film like ‘Jodha Akbar’, the costumes often capture attention, reflecting the characters’ personalities even before the film’s release. In an action-drama like ‘Dhurandhar’, however, the costumes usually paint a tale of power, where fall and neutral shades with rugged action stitches bind the characters together. But this was not the case with ‘Dhurandhar’. Ranveer Singh, who leads the film, appeared in a stunning traditional look. This ensemble is not just clothing; it carries notes of a forgotten 19th-century craft that holds a deep and meaningful legacy.

Century-old craft connection

Ranveer Singh’s outfit from the song ‘Shararat’ in the film was designed to mark a celebration and further signify his status in the film. For this role, creators chose costume designer Smriti Chauhan and clothing brand Divani, as he portrayed a groom. This collaboration revived the forgotten heritage and craft of Patiala khillat, adding grandeur to his look, which fit perfectly with the narrative.

Ranveer’s iconic wedding look spoke of old-world charm

He wore a statement Shaneel jacket styled after an archival 19th-century Patiala khillat reference, which was once presented to the royal family of Patiala. The brand Divani builds on this lineage, infusing touches of dapka embroidery and zari paani with hand-filled detailing drawn from the khillat’s ‘Tree of Life’ layout. The stunning light-catching embroidery photographed beautifully and was paired with a handwoven taupe kurta and moonga-silk trousers. This quietly supported the centrepiece beneath the jacket, together forming a royal fitting.

The one-of-a-kind embroidery that charmed us all

The centrepiece of his outfit was the long coat, a layered sherwani featuring traditional zardozi paired with dapka notes. The intense repetitive motifs formed a dense coordination and carried meaning. This repetition suggests the individual’s rank and authority, and it is achieved without heavy embellishment. Drenched in earthy hues, his jacket was dominated by tones of brown and antique gold. It aligned with the film’s raw setup and adhered to its subtle aesthetics.

5/5

A standout narrative

Considering the film’s plot, Ranveer Singh’s costume choice reflects his character Hamza’s identity shift. He is the ultimate mole who quietly adapts to a foreign environment, matches their status, and remains absolutely fearless. Anchoring meaning via costume and shaping the character’s worth is strategic, necessary, and a powerful move. It makes the character relevant and is further proof of how art and its legacy permeate every segment of the world.
