Janmashtami 2025: Krishna temples across the world where Janmashtami is celebrated

Janmashtami is one of the many festivals of the Hindu religion that is celebrated globally by people who are followers of the deity Lord Krishna. In 2025, Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, will be celebrated on August 16, 2025. The day celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami marks a grand celebration in Krishna temples across the globe, which not only recreates the birth ceremony of the lord but also rejoices in his arrival to the mortal realm.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, Mathura

The city of Mathura, particularly the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, is widely believed to be the place where Lord Krishna was born. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, the city comes alive during Janmashtami with people putting up jhankis to depict the story of Krishna's birth. The celebrations go on for two days with fasting during the day and feasting at night after welcoming the lord. Within the temple, the birth of the lord is celebrated with his idol being bathed, adorned with clothes and jewellery and worshipped on his birthday.

Krishna Mandir, Nepal

Out of the numerous countries in the world where Janmashtami is a national holiday, Nepal is one. The Krishna Mandir in the Patan Durbar Square of the Kathmandu valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Janmashtami is celebrated with great fervour. Devotees practice fasting, praying, and engage in a midnight vigil where they recite the Bhagavad Geeta and sing bhajans of the lord.

ISKCON, New York

Hinduism is actually one of the bigger religions in the US, and a lot of folks here are especially devoted to Lord Krishna. That’s why cities like New York and Los Angeles throw huge parades during Janmashtami. People head to ISKCON temples to sing bhajans, talk about Krishna’s stories, and help out with preparing and offering food. There’s also a midnight arti, abhishek ceremony, and traditional dances, making it a lively and fun celebration.

Bhaktivedanta Manor, London

The UK hosts one of the largest celebrations of Janmashtami in Europe. The Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire and ISKCON temples across the country host grand celebrations for Janmashtami that not only cater to the Indian community but also to a diverse audience. People flock to the religious centre to engage in midnight arti to celebrate Lord Krishna's birth, sing his bhajans, dance together and welcome their beloved deity into the world.

Among numerous ISKCON temples around the world where the Janmashtami celebrations take place, Johannesburg in South Africa is one of the famous ones. Along with the midnight birth ceremony, abhishek, bhajans and food offerings, the temple also hosts traditional dance and singing performances that the devotees partake in.
