Onam, the annual harvest festival of the state of Kerala, is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety by Malayalis across the world. As per the Malayalam calender, this much-waited festival, which is celebrated for 10 days, usually falls on the month of ‘Chingam’. According to the scriptures, Onam is observed to celebrate the homecoming of the great King Mahabali.
Among the many rituals and festivities, people eagerly look forward to Onam Sandhya. Sandhya, which means a banquet in Malayali, consists of an elaborate feast that has every delectable dish of the Malayali cuisine. From banana chips to mango pickle, curd rice to avial, rasam to a varieties of chutney, the feast is an integral part of the festival. Also, Onam is famous for ‘pokalam’ (the intricate flower arrangement), boat races, masked dance among others.
