Dussehra is a very pious Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. Also known as Vijayadashami, Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of Navratri, or Durga Puja. This year, it will be celebrated on October 8 (Tuesday).
Significance of Dussehra
Historically, Dussehra also holds great significance and considered to be very auspicious. Vijaya Dashmi is the day when Lord Ram killed Ravana, the evil ten-headed king after fighting a battle of ten days and saved his wife Sita. Thus, to commemorate the victory and the advent of festivities, the day is known as Dussehra or Vijaya Dashmi, or the tenth day of victory.

It is also said that the day not only symbolizes the victory of Ram over Ravan but also the victory of mankind. Hence, religious followers believe that whenever chaos and tensions prevail in the society, or when evil tries to overpower the good, God will come in, act as a saviour and protect the devotees from destruction.
Dussehra celebrations
While a lot of people hold pujas and pay respect to Lord Ram and Sita, Dussehra marks the end of the much-celebrated Ramleela in the Northern parts of the country. Celebrations aren't complete without seeing the effigy of Ravana burn in the evening.
