Happy Diwali 2020: Wishes, Messages and Images

It is that time of the year again!

The streets are twinkling with lights, houses are cleaned and beautifully decorated, markets are buzzing with shoppers buying clothes and sweets for their loved ones. Everyone is all set to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of health, wealth and prosperity.

Diwali is one of the most important Hindu festivals and is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. People wait for this festival throughout the year. It is a festival that celebrates the victory of light over darkness. The five days extravagant festival starts with Dhanteras which is on November 12, followed by Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.

Diwali is celebrated on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year it falls on November 14.

There are different legends associated with this auspicious festival. As per one legend, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya on this day after defeating the Demon King Ravana. People decorated their homes and lit diyas to welcome him. As per other stories, on Diwali Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi got married.

In Bengal, Diwali is dedicated to the worshipping of Goddess Kali. In Southern India, people take an oil bath in the morning and wear new clothes.
