Eid al-Adha, also termed as Eid Qurban, is the second most celebrated Islamic festival, across the world. Eid-ul-Adha 2022: What is its significance?

This day is observed to honour Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael in obedience to Allah's instruction. The story shows Satan's effort to entice Ibrahim into disobeying God's order, as told in the Quran. Ibrahim, on the other hand, is unaffected and notifies Ismail, who accepts to get sacrificed on God's order.

However, it is thought that Allah gave a lamb to offer instead of Ibrahim's son before he could sacrifice his son. Every year on this day, the Muslim community sacrifices an animal, most commonly sheep, in honour of this intervention. Hence "Festival of the Sacrifice" is another name for Eid al-Adha. The sacrificed animal is split into three parts: one for the poor, one for the home, and one for the family.

Eid-ul-Adha 2022: Prayers

At the mosque, devotees offer Eid al-Adha prayers. On the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the Eid al-Adha prayer is offered at any time after the Sun has fully risen until just before the start of Zuhr time. The prayer may be postponed to the 11th of Dhu al-Hijjah and subsequently to the 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah if there is a force majeure.

Congregational Eid prayers are offered. Women's participation in prayer congregations varies depending on the community. It is divided into two rakats (units), the first of which has seven takbirs and the second of which has five. Salat al-Eid differs from the five daily canonical prayers for Shia Muslims in that there is no adhan (call to prayer) or iqama (call) for the two Eid prayers. The salat (prayer) is followed by the Imam's khutbah, or discourse.
