Karwa Chauth 2025: DOs and DON’Ts for fasting you must know

Karwa Chauth, an annual festival celebrated in the Northern parts of India to seek marital harmony and longevity, is almost here. During this Hindu festival, married women observe a fast from dawn to moonrise for their husbands' health and longevity. Marked by love, this festival celebrates the beauty and significance of marital relationships.

When is Karwa Chauth in 2025?

This year, Karwa Chauth will be observed on Friday, Oct. 10, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. The Chaturthi Tithi begins on Oct. 9 at 10:54 PM IST and ends on Oct. 10 at 7:38 PM IST. These timings will shift based on your local time zone. If you are in New York City, the puja muhurat will be between 6:25 PM and 7:40 PM, and the fasting (upavasa) period is roughly from 7:01 AM to 7:42 PM.
Karwa Chauth is indeed significant for Indians living in the US and those married to Indian partners. Here's a guide to the essential dos and don'ts you should know as you observe Karwa Chauth abroad.

3/6

The Dos

Start with a pre-dawn sargi meal before the fast begins. Aim to eat protein and complex carbohydrates, which will keep you full and provide energy throughout the day. Load up on protein-rich foods like yogurt, nuts, and whole grains.
Hydration is key. So, the night before, keep yourselves hydrated. Drink adequate fluids, especially with electrolytes, to prevent dehydration of any sort. Dehydration could really exhaust you during the fast and lead to headaches and fatigue.
Pick the vibrant hues to dress. Go for vibrant reds, pinks or yellows, which symbolize prosperity and joy. Don’t forget the sindoor, bindis and bangles, and kajal.

4/6

The Don'ts

Traditionally, black or white attires are not encouraged. These colours are considered inauspicious as they evoke mourning.
Don’t do any strenuous activity. As your body is already fatigued, physical exertion can exhaust you.
Avoid drinking tea or coffee prior to the fast, as it can lead to acidity and other gut issues while fasting.
Don't ignore health signals. Pregnant women or those with conditions like diabetes should consult doctors and consider a modified fast with fruits.

5/6

Breaking the fast

It is important to break the fast mindfully. After a day of fasting, your body may crave food. However, gulping it down all at once can have a significant impact on your health. The prashad includes sweets and fried foods; however, do not go overboard with these. First drink fluids before having the meal. Ensure that the first meal is on the lighter side.

6/6

Happy Karwa Chauth

Today, many married men also join their wives for the Karwa Chauth fasting and festivities. It reflects on the equality they bring into the relationship. This is also the ideal time to show up to temples together and bond over tradition and love. Happy Karwa Chauth!
