This time their adventures are set in Africa. Around 533 A.D. the Vandal Kingdom fell. A high priestess cursed their kingdom after her sacred scrolls were stolen and the scrolls haven't been found since.

Sam and Remi's philanthropist habits bring them to Africa, for a shipment of supplies sent to a school in Africa never reaches and they go to deliver the replacement themselves. Unfortunately, they get tangled up with robbers who seem interested in the scrolls. The robbers capture Remi and some students as hostages and the Fargos must use all their skills to survive.

The writing is as engaging as the rest of the series though longtime followers of the series might find the story predictable. One of the best parts of the book is the local flavour. It is set in Tunisia and Nigeria and each chapter begins with an African proverb. The story is high on action scenes, with many gunfights and chases, which takes the focus away from the historical treasure hunt plot. Still, the book is a fascinating read.

How critics view the book:

"Witty dialogue, loads of detail about the local culture and food, and plenty of red herrings will delight Cussler fans. This entry may be the best yet in the series," reviews Publishers Weekly.
