For those not familiar with Indian mythology, Ahalya was created by Brahma and married to Rishi Gautam, one of the greatest Rishis. She is mostly remembered for her husband's curse and sometimes mentioned in passing in the Ramayana. This story gives her life and perspective fairly however.

In Kane's dreamy flowing third person prose, we see the story of Ahalya, her childhood and her dreams; her falling in love and her marriage and finally the falling out and the curse. Through her tale we see the struggles and issues women even today face as they chafe against the chains of society. Her character as dynamic, evolving through the book and her final cursed state is well explored from Kane's perspective.

The tale isn't told just from Ahalya's perspective though. Gautam, Indra & his wife Sachi's perspective is also given, adding to the depth of the tale. The book is a must read for all mythology fans.
