Alice Munro joins Nobel laureates' league

Mo Yan, whose complex world of fiction often reminds readers of William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, pipped bookmaker's favourite Japanese Haruki Murakami to become the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 2012. Mo, 57, is the author of renowned novels such as 'Red Sorghum' (later made into an acclaimed film) and 'Big Breasts and Wide Hips'. In an interview to Granta, he once said, "Censorship is great for literature creation."

Alice Munro joins Nobel laureates' league

Elfriede Jelinek won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 2004. She is an Austrian playwright and novelist. Among her notable works are ‘The Piano Teacher’, ‘Die Kinder der Toten’, and ‘Lust’. Unlike other authors, Jelinek did not accept her prize in person and instead, a video message was presented at the ceremony.

Harold Pinter won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 2005. An English playwright, screenwriter, director and actor, Pinter was one of the most influential modern British dramatists with a career that spanned more than 50 years. Among his notable works are ‘The Birthday Party’, ‘The Homecoming’ and ‘Betrayal’.
