How to choose the right books to read

How to choose the right books to read

Even though you are a bibliophile, are you still struggling to find a book that will completely win you over? Or you are a novice who is looking to get into reading? In both these cases (and several others), it sometimes gets difficult to find the right book - one that won't let our attention steer somewhere else and keep us glued. If you are facing the same problem, there is no need to worry. Here is a look at how to choose the right books for you.

2/8

Discover your reading tastes

Think about what kind of books do you like or what plots interest you. Are you a fan of comedy or tragedy? Do you want a pacey book or one that lets you calm your nerves? Once you can answer these questions, you will understand which book is right for you.

3/8

Read the works of your favorite authors

This is one of the easiest options in case you are struggling to decide on what to read. Look for an author whose works have always impressed you. He/she could be from the list of your top favorites. From Shakespeare to Dan Brown to Jeffrey Archer, it could be anyone.

4/8

Head for Nobel Prize winners

Anyone who has won a Nobel Prize in Literature knows what they are doing. Starting with their books is worth a try. Think of Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Pearl S. Buck, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and many other luminaries.

5/8

Take a look at 'best books ever' lists

There are several listicles all over the internet that might help you choose the next book you want to read. Whether it's fiction, non-fiction, romance, or thriller - you can find a 'best ever' list for all of them.

6/8

Don't stick to a book you don't feel like continuing

This is a very common mistake. Though we get past a considerable amount of pages of a book, we don't feel like continuing with it anymore. But we continue. However, you need to understand that you don't have an obligation to read the book and you are free to quit it. Don't read for the sake of reading! It takes all the fun out of it.

7/8

Visit bookstores

Commercial and independent bookstores often have well received old and new texts placed around the store, so have a read of their synopses and see if any of them are for you. You can also try reading several random pages as this can be a good indication of the quality of writing.

8/8

Watch films

Although it’s frowned upon by some literature fans, watching films is a great way to discover excellent books. A large proportion of the movies you see are adapted from literary texts. Hunt down the book and read it beforehand or after seeing the film to offer a new perspective on the story. J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter Series' is a perfect example. You will be surprised how much the text differs from the film.
