Here are 10 reasons why you must attend a literature festival

Literature festivals seem to be popping up everywhere these days and we should take a moment to be thankful for that. In the past two centuries, literacy has spread across the world and because of that literature has also spread and flourished. Books are being appreciated in every corner of the world and literature is being celebrated for it's effect on culture. And language is no barrier to this new craze. Literature festivals are a beautiful celebration of an art form that touches everyone's life. So, here are some reasons you should attend a literature festival, some even apply to if you don't like reading.
2/11

A chance to meet your favourite authors

The primary draw for most readers is that they can meet the people who wrote the words and worlds that whisked them out of their own perspective to an entirely new one. Depending on the schedule you can simply hear them speak or even get a chance to interact with them. Most talks have a question and answer session at the end and sometimes a few authors also attend the sessions of others as audience and you can meet them one on one!
3/11

Discover new authors

Authors are rarely alone on a stage, there's usually a panel of similar or opposite authors discussing their genre so while you went specifically to hear your favorite author(s), you might find another in the same genre or find that you agree with one who opposes your favourite author in the debate. Either way, your life will be enriched.
4/11

Autographed books

Often authors are available for book signings at literature festivals and you can bring your own copy to get a personal inscription. Even if you don't feel too attached to certain copies, you might know a book lover who does and this would make for a lovely gift. There's often a bookstore set up at the litfest venue which is well stocked with copies of all the authors attending the event and sometimes they leave a bunch of autographed copies in the bookstore if they aren't signing personally themselves.
5/11

A way to improve your writing

Literature festivals are a great place for aspiring or seasoned writers who want to improve. People from the literary and publishing industries come together with authors to offer useful advice on writing, publishing and what is in demand. One can get practical advice and maybe even make contacts in a field they want to enter.
6/11

Learn more about literature

The world of literature has evolved a lot in the past century and seems to be evolving even faster. The talks and sessions at a litfest provides insights from not just the writers but also from publishers and people from the respective fields that are being written about in one place. One doesn't have to be a reader to know and enjoy such thought provoking discussions.
7/11

Make new friends

Like-minded people get along and chances are you will find many attending the same session as you in a litfest. Readers and writers are often solitary by nature and these festivals are one place you will be sure to find them in numbers. It's easier to make a friend at a literary fest than a library!
8/11

Learn about other ways to enjoy literature

Literature is but one form of storytelling, educating or sharing thoughts. From plays, movies/documentaires and tv/web series, the art is just growing as technology changes and this is a topic often discussed and broadcasted in these fests. You might find a play or screen adaptation of book you enjoyed at a litfest and, if you could never connect with books, this might be a way to enjoy what you missed out on.
9/11

Learn about other topics

Books explore a variety of topics and literature festivals reflect that. Fiction and writing are only a part of litfests and any topic that's been making headlines or affecting people will surely be discussed by those who write on it or are the reason behind it. From politicians talking to political writers, to chefs discussing their cookbooks with diet book authors, there are talks or sessions to interest even those who've never read a book in their life.
10/11

Learn a skill

Some literature festivals have interactive sessions which can be an enriching experience. Poetry contests, drawing workshops for comics or illustration for those interested in very literary genre's and varied workshops centered around current bestselling books will always be there for those who don't want to sit through a talk.
11/11

Great outing for kids

There are sessions for children in literature festivals too, from live readings by the authors to writing or drawing sessions for every age. Some are for the literary minded and others are simply to keep the kids busy while you attend a session. Either way, if you're trying to inculcate a reading habit or other creative habits in your children, bringing them to a litfest a great idea. They're often litfests and book fairs just for children too.
