Coronavirus outbreak: Book fairs and events cancelled

The novel coronavirus, which started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, has since then spread to nearly 70 countries. The disease has infected over 95,000 people and resulted in over 3,000 deaths worldwide, creating a global panic. People are keeping minimal contact with others and avoiding public gatherings. In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, we list down some important book fairs and events which have been cancelled across the world to prevent the spreading of the disease. Read on:

Bologna Children’s Book Fair to go digital

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair (BCBF), which was expecting the participation of 1500 exhibitors from 80 countries, got cancelled this year but news is that it will now go digital. The annual event will host an online rights hub and webinars on May 4. Talking about the development, Elena Pasoli, BCBF exhibitions manager, said according to The Bookseller that they will play the role "as the biggest rights marketplace for children’s content”. She also said, “And here we are, offering the business stage and the creative highlights of the industry, with the aim of expanding even more the reach of the magnificent work of children’s book publishers, agents, illustrators, authors and licensing professionals.” The programme of the digital BCBF festival will be announced on April 23.

Edinburgh International Book Festival cancelled

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Edinburgh International Book Festival for this year has been cancelled. Instead, the charity is planning to host online events this summer where "writers can share their stories, ideas and perspectives with others".

London Book Fair

The London Book Fair is one of the world's biggest publishing trade fairs. But keeping in mind the coronavirus outbreak in Europe, the London Book Fair is now cancelled. The news was announced by its organisers on March 4. The London Book Fair was scheduled to happen between March 10-12 and roughly 25,000 people, including international exhibitors and visitors, were expected to attend the fair at Olympia London. Many publishers including Simon & Schuster, Amazon, Hachette and HarperCollins has already withdrawn from the fair citing coronavirus outbreak.

Wimbledon BookFest's World Book Day event

World Book Day, a charity which is funded by publishers and booksellers in the UK and Ireland, is celebrated on March 5. But due to a local coronavirus case in London, UK the Wimbledon BookFest's World Book Day was cancelled. The event was supposed to feature authors including Sita Brachmachari, Konnie Huq, and Karyn Parsons.

Germany's Leipzig Book Fair

The organizers of a major German book fair in the eastern city of Leipzig confirmed that the event would be canceled over the spread of the novel coronavirus. "Unfortunately we have to confirm that. Further information will follow shortly," they said on Twitter, quoting a media report on the cancellation. Last year’s edition of the Leipzig Book Fair attracted 286,000 visitors, according to the organizers.

Paris book fair

The annual book fair in Paris has been cancelled by the French government in order to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The news was shared by the French publishers' union in a statement. "Following the government's decision to forbid any gathering of more than 5,000 people in a closed space, it is with regret that we have taken the decision to cancel the 2020 edition of the Paris' book fair," they said.
India was the guest of honour at the Paris Book Fair 2020.
According to France 24, on March 4, the government reported a total of 204 cases, and a total of four deaths.
