The hair care your hair needs this winter

Winter is that season when everything feels nicer on the surface. Cooler mornings, hot chai, cosy blankets, and a break from sweaty hair days. But while we’re busy enjoying the weather, our hair is often silently suffering. Dryness, dandruff, hair fall, frizz, and that constant “why does my hair feel lifeless?” moment become very real in Indian winters.

The truth is, most winter hair problems don’t happen because of the weather alone. They happen because of the small mistakes we make without realising it. So if you want hair that actually looks good through December and January, here are a few things you really should not be doing.

Do not overwash your hair

This is one of the biggest winter mistakes. Because we sweat less in cold weather, washing your hair too often only strips away its natural oils. And once those oils are gone, dryness, breakage, and dandruff follow quickly.

In winters, most people only need to wash their hair two times a week. If your scalp isn’t greasy, don’t wash it just out of habit. And no, dry shampoo is not a replacement for washing either. Use it occasionally, not daily.

Do not skip oiling completely

A lot of people stop oiling in winter because they feel cold, lazy, or just don’t feel like dealing with sticky hair. Big mistake. Winter air is dry, and indoor heaters or blowers make it worse. Your hair needs nourishment more than ever.

But overdoing oiling is also not the answer. Oiling once or twice a week is enough. Warm coconut oil, almond oil, or even mustard oil works well in Indian winters. Massage gently, leave it on for a few hours or overnight if it suits you, and wash it out properly.

Skipping oiling altogether is one of the fastest ways to invite dull, brittle hair.

Do not wash hair with hot water

Yes, hot showers feel amazing in winter. But hot water is harsh on your scalp and hair. It dries out the scalp, increases dandruff, and makes hair more prone to breakage.

Use lukewarm water instead. And if you can, finish with a quick rinse of slightly cooler water. It helps seal the cuticles and makes hair look smoother. Your hair will thank you for it, even if your body complains a little.

​Do not ignore dandruff thinking it will go away

Winter dandruff is very common in India, especially in North India where cold air and pollution mix beautifully to mess up your scalp. Many people ignore it until it turns into itching, flakes on clothes, and hair fall.

If you see dandruff starting, act early. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week. Keep your scalp clean but not dry. And please don’t scratch your scalp aggressively. That only makes things worse.

Dandruff left untreated in winter can stick around well into summer.

​Do not step out with wet hair

This one sounds basic, but a lot of people still do it. Going out with wet or damp hair in winter exposes your scalp to cold air directly. This weakens hair roots and increases the chances of catching a cold, sinus issues, and even headaches.

Always make sure your hair is completely dry before stepping out. If you’re using a hair dryer, use it on a low heat setting. Excess heat plus winter dryness is a bad combination.

​Do not overuse heat styling tools

Straighteners, curlers, and blow dryers already damage hair. In winter, the damage doubles because hair is already dry and fragile. Daily heat styling can lead to split ends, breakage, and extreme dryness.

If you must style your hair, use a heat protectant and keep the temperature low. And give your hair regular no-heat days. Winter is actually the perfect time to embrace natural textures, buns, braids, and simple hairstyles.

Do not forget conditioner

Many people skip conditioner in winter thinking it will make hair greasy or flat. In reality, conditioner is what helps lock in moisture and reduce frizz.

Use a conditioner after every wash, focusing on the lengths and ends, not the scalp. If your hair feels very dry, a weekly hair mask can make a big difference.

Conditioner is not optional in winter. It’s essential.

​Do not tie hair too tight

Cold weather already makes hair more fragile. Tight ponytails, buns, or braids put extra stress on the roots and can lead to hair breakage and traction hair fall.

Opt for loose hairstyles. Use fabric-covered hair ties instead of rubber bands. And never tie wet hair tightly, especially before sleeping.

​Do not neglect your diet and water intake

This one often gets ignored in winter. Because we feel less thirsty, we drink less water. Dehydration shows up quickly in your hair as dryness and increased hair fall.

Drink enough water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Include seasonal foods like carrots, spinach, nuts, seeds, eggs, and ghee in your diet. What you eat reflects directly in your hair health.

Don't let oil stay on your hair for long

In winter, letting oil sit on your hair for too long can actually do more harm than good. Cold weather slows down absorption, so oil tends to stay on the scalp, attracting dust and clogging pores instead of nourishing the roots. This can lead to itchiness, dandruff, and even hair fall. Thick layers of oil also trap cold, which may make the scalp feel heavy and uncomfortable. Do not assume winter hair damage is unavoidable

Dry, frizzy hair in winter is common, but it’s not unavoidable. Most winter hair problems are preventable with small, consistent habits.

Be gentle with your hair. Protect it from cold air, feed it well, and don’t overdo anything. Winter-perfect hair is not about expensive products or complicated routines. It’s about avoiding these simple mistakes and listening to what your hair actually needs.

And once you get it right, winter can actually be one of the best seasons for your hair.
