What happens to the skin if one doesn't apply a sunscreen cream
Sunburn: One of the most immediate and visible effects of unprotected sun exposure is sunburn. UVB radiation penetrates the outer layer of the skin (epidermis), causing damage to its cells. This damage triggers an inflammatory response, resulting in redness, pain, swelling, and sometimes blistering. Sunburn not only causes discomfort but also increases the risk of long-term skin damage and skin cancer.
Hyperpigmentation: Prolonged sun exposure can lead to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This can cause irregular darkening of the skin known as hyperpigmentation, including freckles, sunspots, and melasma (patchy brown discoloration). UV radiation triggers melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, to become hyperactive, resulting in the formation of dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Weakened immune response: UV radiation suppresses the skin's immune response by damaging the skin's immune cells, such as Langerhans cells. These cells play a crucial role in detecting and repairing damaged DNA within the skin cells. When the immune response is compromised, the skin becomes more vulnerable to infections, environmental pollutants, and the development of skin cancers.
Increased risk of skin cancer: Without sunscreen protection, the risk of developing skin cancer significantly rises. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are all associated with UV radiation exposure. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are more common and tend to develop in areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, and hands. Melanoma, although less common, is more aggressive and can spread rapidly to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early.
Eye damage: UV radiation can also cause damage to the eyes, leading to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis (sunburn of the cornea). Prolonged exposure to UV radiation without proper eye protection can increase the risk of these eye conditions, resulting in vision impairment or loss.
Sunscreen plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation. Regular and proper application of sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher can help reduce the risk of sunburn, premature aging, hyperpigmentation, weakened immune response, DNA damage, and skin cancer. Additionally, wearing protective clothing, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and wearing sunglasses with UV protection are essential components of a comprehensive sun protection strategy.
