Summer hair growth: 5 ways to boost hair growth in summer

How to grow hair in summers

Let’s be honest: summer is a bit of a double-edged sword for our hair. On one hand, there is this long-standing myth (with a grain of scientific truth!) that hair actually grows faster in the summer because of increased blood flow to the skin and a higher metabolic rate. On the other hand, we’ve got chlorine, salt water, scorching UV rays, and that lovely "humidity frizz" that makes us want to chop it all off by July.

If you’re currently staring at your reflection wondering why your hair feels more like sun-baked straw than a flowing mermaid mane, don’t worry. You don't need a miracle; you just need a strategy. Boosting hair growth during the heat isn't about expensive "magic" gummies; it’s about working with the season rather than fighting it.

Here are five realistic, slightly lazy-girl-approved ways to kickstart your hair growth this summer.

2/7

The "scalp first" philosophy

Think of your hair like a garden. You wouldn't expect prize-winning roses to grow out of dry, cracked, dusty dirt, right? Your scalp is the soil. In the summer, that "soil" gets clogged with sweat, excess sebum, and layers of dry shampoo that we use to hide the fact that we’ve been outside for five minutes.

The Fix: Scalp detox and massage.

Once a week, give yourself a proper scalp exfoliation. You don’t even need to buy a fancy scrub - a little sea salt mixed with your regular shampoo works wonders. While you’re at it, spend five minutes massaging your head.

Why? Because massage triggers vasodilation - it brings blood rushing to those follicles. More blood means more nutrients and oxygen, which essentially tells your hair, "Hey, it’s time to wake up and grow." Plus, it feels incredible after a long day. If you want to level up, try the "inversion method" (hanging your head off the side of the bed while massaging), but don’t stay there too long - we want hair growth, not a head rush.

3/7

Hydration: It’s not just for your water bottle

We all know we need to drink more water when it’s 30°C+ outside, but your hair is usually the last part of your body to receive that hydration. By the time your internal organs have taken their share, your hair follicles are basically fighting over the leftovers.

The fix: The inside-out moisture sandwich.

First, drink the water. Aim for those 2–3 liters. But second, you need to stop the summer air from stealing the moisture you already have. UV rays act like a bleach on your hair; they degrade the protein (keratin) and strip the moisture.

This summer, make "leave-in conditioner" your personality trait. Before you hit the pool or the beach, soak your hair in fresh water and slather on a leave-in cream or a light oil (like jojoba or argan). Hair is like a sponge - if it’s already full of clean water and conditioner, it can’t soak up the nasty chlorine or salt that causes breakage. Remember: length retention is just as important as growth. If your hair is growing at the root but breaking at the ends, you’ll never see the progress.

4/7

Eat your way to longer locks

Summer is the best time to fix your diet because, let’s face it, nobody wants a heavy, greasy meal when it’s boiling. Luckily, the stuff that keeps you cool and energized is also exactly what your hair is craving.

The fix: Seasonal superfoods.

Your hair is made of a tough protein called keratin, so if you’re skimping on protein, your body will deprioritize hair growth.

Berries: Blueberries and strawberries are loaded with Vitamin C, which helps with collagen production and iron absorption.

Avocados: They provide those healthy fats that keep your hair shiny and your scalp supple.

Nuts and Seeds: Walnuts and chia seeds are packed with biotin and zinc.

Try to swap one of your afternoon iced coffees for a green smoothie or a bowl of Greek yogurt with seeds. It’s a small tweak, but your follicles will thank you about three months from now when that growth cycle really kicks in.

5/7

Give the heat tools a summer vacation

This might be the hardest pill to swallow, but if you’re trying to gain an inch of length this summer, you have to put down the flat iron. The sun is already doing enough thermal damage; adding a 200°C wand to the mix is essentially asking for split ends.

The Fix: Embrace the air-dry.

Summer is the perfect time to figure out your natural texture. Use the "braid-out" method: wash your hair in the evening, apply a tiny bit of salt spray or mousse, and put it into two loose French braids. In the morning, you’ve got effortless waves without a single second of heat damage.

If you absolutely must blow-dry for an event, use the "cool" setting. It takes longer, sure, but it seals the cuticle and keeps the hair shaft intact. Think of it this way: every time you skip the heat, you’re saving a few millimeters of hair that would have otherwise snapped off.

6/7

Protective styling (Without the boredom)

In the summer, we tend to throw our hair up in a messy bun with a tight elastic just to get it off our necks. Here’s the problem: that constant tension on the same spot every day causes "mechanical breakage." You might think your hair isn't growing, but in reality, you’re just snapping it off right where that hair tie sits.

The Fix: Silk scrunchies and claw clips.

Switch to silk or satin scrunchies - they don't "bite" into the hair. Or better yet, join the 90s revival and use a claw clip. It distributes the weight of your hair more evenly and doesn't pull on the delicate baby hairs around your face.

Also, don't be afraid of a chic sun hat. It’s the ultimate protective style. It keeps the UV rays off your scalp (preventing "scalp burn," which is a real growth-killer) and keeps your hair out of the wind. A silk scarf wrapped around a low ponytail is another way to look like you’re on a Mediterranean holiday while secretly shielding your ends from the elements.

7/7

The reality check

Here is the "human" truth: hair grows, on average, about half an inch a month. You aren't going to wake up with Rapunzel hair by August just because you ate an avocado and did a headstand.

However, by focusing on scalp health and preventing breakage, you ensure that every millimeter of growth stays on your head. Summer is a time of high energy and movement—your body is primed to renew itself. If you stop stressing it out with harsh chemicals and heat, and start nourishing it with water and gentle care, you’ll be genuinely surprised at the thickness and length you’ll see by the time the leaves start to turn.

So, go ahead—dive into the pool (with your hair pre-soaked!), enjoy the sun (with a hat!), and let your hair do its thing. Patience is the only ingredient you can’t buy in a bottle.
