Ditch your exhaustive skincare routine and try skin cycling
What is skin cycling
Skin cycling is a structured approach to skincare. Dr Manisha Mareddy, a dermatologist, explains, “It involves rotating or alternating between different types of active ingredients over the course of four days. This helps the skin to recover and regenerate between treatments, while still addressing various skin concerns effectively.”Products to include in skin cycling
Experts suggest including a gentle cleanser, chemical exfoliant, retinol, a nourishing moisturiser and sunscreen. Dr Rinky Kapoor, dermatologist, shares, “For exfoliation, products with glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid work well. For the retinoid phase, start with a lower concentration (0.1%–0.3%) before progressing. During recovery nights, prioritise using hydrating products with ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalene, and niacinamide to rebuild the barrier. Sunscreen during the day is nonnegotiable, as actives increase sun sensitivity.”STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
DAY 1:EXFOLIATIONUse a gentle chemical exfoliant (e.g., AHAs or BHAs) to remove dead skin cells and clear pores
DAY 2: RETINOIDS
Apply a retinoid (like tretinoin or a gentler retinol) to promote skin cell turnover and encourage collagen production
Use these days to solely focus on moisturisation and hydration. Repeat the cycle for optimal results. The routine can be adjusted based on one’s skin sensitivity. Those with dry or reactive skin can extend the recovery phase, while those having oily skin can add actives more frequently.
Skin cycling is best suited for individuals with sensitive skin, those who are new to actives, or people who have experienced irritation from traditional skincare routines. If you struggle with redness, flakiness, or inflammation from using strong ingredients, skin cycling might help
Benefits
Skin cycling offers several benefits. Dr Rupika Singh, dermatologist, says, “It helps reduce skin irritation from overuse of actives, strengthens skin barrier and encourages cell renewal for smoother, brighter skin. It can make your products work more efficiently, and help the skin become more tolerant to stronger actives.”Individuals who experience irritation from daily use of active ingredients should try skin cycling. It provides time for regeneration and barrier repair. It’s not necessarily better, but more strategic
Downsides
Skin cycling is generally safe, however, Dr Kapoor points out that its effectiveness depends on consistency and correct product use. “Over-exfoliation or using strong actives frequently can still irritate the skin. Another limitation is that results take time. Some people also find the rotation confusing or unsuitable if they require daily prescription treatments. It’s essential to seek professional help, especially for those with medical skin conditions,” she says.Comments
