One stops hair fall; the other boosts regrowth

Post-COVID, the beauty industry saw the unexpected rise of K-beauty products in the market, where scientific formulations with a hint of natural ingredients were taking over. But, after 5 years, the Indian market is again witnessing a swift change, with more and more people shifting towards natural ingredients and DIY habits. From natural face masks to hair oils, women are now using nature’s bliss, which causes absolutely no harm and gives unexpected positive results. Now, more and more people are using onion seed oil and onion oil for hair growth, which has raised the bar for comparisons. So, let’s see which is better for hair growth.

What is onion seed oil?

Onion seed oil is a natural oil extracted from the seeds of kalonji, or black seed. Despite the name, it does not come from the onion bulbs and doesn’t even smell of onions. It is nutrient-dense and is usually cold-pressed and extracted from the plant. Used to treat issues of hair loss and dandruff and to strengthen the hair roots primarily, it increases shine and is also used for scalp treatments.

What is onion oil?

Onion oil is mostly used for hair growth purposes and is directly extracted from the bulbs of the onion via steam distillation or by cold-pressing. High in sulphur, potassium, and antioxidants, it stimulates the scalp, reduces breakage, strengthens the hair follicles, and also prevents hair fall. From stimulating blood circulation to increasing the shine, it also contains antifungal and antibacterial properties and is usually combined with coconut or almond oil for polished hair quality.

How to use the onion seed oil?

Onion seed oil, aka kalonji oil, can actually irritate the scalp if not used properly. Always use it on a clean and dry scalp, as a dirty one can lead to intense buildup. Warm a few drops and only apply to the scalp, not the lengths. Understand the philosophy of ‘less is more’ and massage your scalp for 5-10 minutes. The goal should be blood circulation and not friction. Always dilute it with castor, coconut, or almond oil, and use it only once a week. It is not a hair growth oil, but it targets scalp treatment and helps in regrowth, not new growth.

How to use onion oil the right way?

Onion oil promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall by improving the scalp's blood circulation. It nourishes the follicles with sulphur and acts as an active antioxidant. From strengthening the hair to reducing breakage, it treats dandruff and promotes healthier hair quality. Always apply onion oil on a dry scalp, and never take more than two spoons, as it can clog your hair follicles. Massage gently for 10-15 minutes after diluting it, and leave it for 2 hours. Thoroughly rinse your locks and witness the change after 3-4 weeks.

Which is better for hair growth?

Both onion oil and onion seed oil are popular for hair care, but they do not work the same way. Onion oil is rich in sulphur, which strengthens your keratin protein and improves blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth and reducing hair fall. Onion seed oil, on the other hand, supports density but does not fully support hair growth. It, however, stimulates the dormant hair follicles and helps in regrowth and reduces scalp inflammation and dandruff issues as well.
