From fashion to face!

Swedish fast-fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz, aka H&M, has made its grand entry into India’s booming beauty segment. This move comes nearly a decade after the company entered the country in the segment of clothing and home products. This expansion now puts H&M in direct competition with the other established players in the market, like L’Oréal, Nykaa, Reliance’s Tira, and Unilever’s Lakme.

Welcoming private-label beauty range

H&M is a brand that is highly popular amongst millennials and Gen Z because of its affordable and trend-driven fashion range. In the segment of home products as well, it plays it safe with the trendy home decor aesthetics, which are loved by its shoppers. Now, the company plans to increase its brand equity and launch a private-label beauty range, which complements perfectly the existing fashion offerings. Because of the brand’s strong presence in the fashion world, this move in India will help it successfully enter the market segment.

How is it targeting India’s mass segment?

H&M has planned to sell its beauty products through its fashion stores and online platforms. The beauty range will be available directly on their website, but the main question remains whether it will collaborate with beauty platforms like Nykaa and Tira, which can also give it a boost. The company is focused on targeting India’s mass-affluent segment, where the starting price range will be Rs 799, and perfumes will start at Rs 1,299. This demographic placement is a major contributor to India’s beauty and personal care, which is expected to reach around $34 billion by 2028. So, keep your fingers crossed!

Faster go-to-market facility available?

Many brands have collaborated with Sephora in the Indian market. So, the real question remains: apart from their stores, will they be collaborating with other giant chains for a go-to-market facility? The pricing strategy has already put it in direct competition with the makeup brands, so if it goes for a direct go-to facility, then Nykaa and Tira will surely feel the heat.

What does the portfolio look like?

Despite being a new entrant in the beauty industry, H&M has made sure to invest in and plan a big palette, which will include makeup, perfumes, and beauty tools that will be locally manufactured. This is a huge risk, but we absolutely love the brand taking risks. However, for the moment, it's refraining from entering the segment of skincare, but let’s see if the risk taken is all worth it; if it is, then the company will surely pave its way into the segment of skincare. So are you excited to try H&M’s makeup products? Because we surely are.
