Having excessively dry skin? 5 mistakes you are committing right now

Dry skin is an issue that many of us deal with, and it is a common misconception that it only occurs in the winter months. Those who have perpertually dry skin, can face issues in summer months as well, as the skin struggles to retain moisture. However, apart from your skin's inherent texture, there are a couple of other things that you could be doing wrong as well, that can be exacerbating your dryness. Here they are...

Using harsh soaps/cleansers

While keeping your face clean is important, one of the most common mistakes people make is using soaps and cleansers that strip the skin of its natural oils. These harsh products can disrupt the skin's barrier function, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, opt for gentle, moisturizing cleansers that are formulated for your skin type. Look for products labeled as "fragrance-free" or "hypoallergenic" to minimize the risk of irritation. Fragrances and dyes in soaps can be particularly problematic for sensitive skin, so it's best to avoid them altogether.

Not moisturizing immediately after a shower

A lot of people don't know this, but moisturizing your skin is best done when the skin is damp, that is just after a bath. This locks in the moisture more effectively, and improves the hydration levels of your skin. Choose a moisturizer that is rich in emollients and humectants. Emollients help fill gaps between skin cells, making the skin feel smoother and softer. Humectants, on the other hand, attract moisture from the air, helping to keep the skin hydrated. For very dry skin, consider using a moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or niacinamide.

Excessive exfoliation/using a harsh scrub

Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells and promoting skin renewal. However, over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week, depending on your skin type, and use gentle exfoliants that won't damage your skin. This apart, you can also try homemade exfoliants like coffee, sugar, and others that won't rub your skin too much, and are natural as well.

Not protecting your skin

Factors like warm weather, low humidity, and exposure to wind can dry out your skin quickly. Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain a healthy moisture level in the air. Additionally, wearing protective clothing like gloves and scarves when going outdoors can shield your skin from harsh conditions. Avoid taking long, hot showers, as they can strip the skin of its natural oils. Instead, opt for warm showers (room temperature, or even lukewarm) and limit your time in the water.

Not drinking enough water

Not many know that apart from external factors, hydration from the inside too, is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Drinking enough water helps keep your skin cells hydrated and plump, reducing the appearance of dryness. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day to support your skin's health from the inside. Additionally, consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts, can help support the skin's barrier function and reduce inflammation.
