What is alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is a condition where one can experience unexpected hair loss. It is a relapsing-remitting autoimmune disease, in which the patient may experience new episodes of hair loss even after regrowth, most commonly appearing in patches on the scalp. Adopting a well-balanced diet focused on the best foods for alopecia areata is one way to support hair health. From ensuring adequate protein intake to including certain vitamins and minerals, it is important to maintain a clean and active diet. At the same time, one should avoid sweets and processed foods, as they can act as triggers and worsen the condition.

Eggs

Biotin, a B vitamin, has long been known for its role in combating hair loss. While it is mainly found in beef liver and organ meats, which are not everyone’s cup of tea, eggs are another excellent source and a popular breakfast choice worldwide. Egg yolks are particularly rich in biotin, which helps in keratin production, contributing not only to hair growth but also to stronger nails and healthier skin.

Dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, and more)

Incorporating dark leafy greens into your diet is a smart move, as they are packed with essential nutrients like iron, which helps transport oxygen to hair follicles. They are also rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that protects hair follicles, and contain various B vitamins. Avoid deep-frying these vegetables, which destroys most of their nutrients; instead, boil them or consume them raw in salads or smoothies.

Fatty fish

For non-vegetarians and seafood lovers, fatty fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which nourish hair follicles. They are also rich in vitamin D, which is linked to hair growth. Focus on fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring. While they may be a bit pricey, these fish are also high in protein and vitamin B12, making them a beneficial addition for those dealing with hair loss.

Chicken breast

Hair is made of protein, so consuming sufficient protein from food is essential for building strong strands. However, too much protein can have negative effects, so aim for a balance between meat-based and plant-based proteins. Chicken breast is a great option, offering approximately 3.5 ounces of protein, comparable to turkey, fish, beans, and nuts. Boil the chicken and consume a moderate portion daily to maintain a healthy balance.

Bell peppers

Two vitamins play a central role in hair health: C and E. These antioxidants help protect hair follicles from environmental stressors. Bell peppers, bright and delicious, are naturally rich in both vitamins, supporting scalp health, stimulating hair growth, and reducing inflammation, all beneficial for people with alopecia areata. Other foods high in these vitamins include broccoli, kiwi, and tomatoes.
