Why we never hear a Khalistani seeking a piece of Pakistan

An extremist fringe of radicalised Sikhs, living mainly in Canada, Britain, Australia and the US, uses Khalistan as a cover for organised crime.Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency has tried to disrupt India’s increasingly close partnership with the US-led West by weaponising Khalistan. Without their support, the minority government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would collapse.As India’s former deputy national security adviser, Pankaj Saran, noted in The Economic Times: “The Canadian government is also at great risk to itself and its country. It is turning a blind eye to the nexus of gangs and drug mafias that have found safe refuge on its soil. Indian agencies have irrefutable evidence of individuals based in Canada, including the one killed [Hardeep Singh Nijjar], masterminding killings in India.”The gangsters who fled from India set up a base in Canada and other Western countries with funds and arms from the ISI. Canada, in contrast, has been incompetent and often complicit.Trudeau, in a phone call on October 8 to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the Israel-Palestinian conflict, found it necessary to mention the ongoing row with India, inviting widespread ridicule.When Trudeau’s father Pierre Trudeau was Canadian prime minister in the 1980s, he had refused to extradite Talwinder Singh Parmar, the mastermind of the Air India Kanishka bombing that killed all 329 people on board.Deep complicityCanada’s complicity with the ISI in turning a blind eye to violence by migrant Sikh extremists has roiled India-Canada relations for years.The complicity runs deep. This report in India Today (September 21) uncovers the nexus: “Amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, intelligence sources have uncovered a clandestine gathering that took place in Vancouver, implicating agents from Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, and leaders of Khalistan terror organisations. The meeting saw the presence of key figures like Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of Sikhs For Justice, and other Khalistani heads.”Trudeau did not expect India to react as strongly as it did to his allegations in Parliament. More than 40 Canadian diplomats were ordered to leave India by October 10. Trudeau and his foreign affairs minister, Mélanie Joly, have now shed their aggressive stance and are seeking a “private” dialogue with the Indian government.Joly said such diplomatic matters were always better discussed in private. Neither she nor Trudeau applied that principle when the Canadian prime minister made his allegation against India in Parliament on September 18 without offering any evidence. More than three weeks later, Trudeau has still not provided evidence for India’s involvement in gangster-tuned-terrorist Nijjar’s murder.Canada initially tried to draw its Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partners into the row with India. It persuaded US officials to provide mild support to its case. Britain and Australia, however, said very little. New Zealand, the fifth Five Eye, said absolutely nothing.Khalistan in Pakistan Punjab?The question remains: Why do Khalistani separatists never seek an independent state in Pakistan’s Punjab? Veteran Canadian journalist Terry Milewsky, author of Blood for Blood: Fifty Years of the Global Khalistan Project, explains: “The idea of Khalistan lacks intellectual coherence on multiple fronts. There’s not only an absence of information on what it means, but also how to get there. Where is Khalistan? What is the state going to look like? What kind of governance would it have? What role will non-Sikhs play in it? What will the map be? What about the parts in Pakistan? What about Lahore, the seat of Maharaja Ranjit Singh? What about the birthplace of Guru Nanak? These places are fundamental to Sikh culture and history, and yet, they are not being claimed. Why? A judicial inquiry and court trial could follow, they said, along possibly with a sensitive arrest of an Indian official in Canada.This is part of the West’s playbook. When cornered, it uses veiled warnings. The decades-long relationship between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the ISI is well-known.Pakistan, having lost the argument over Kashmir, is using the Khalistan myth to muddy India’s reputation.
