S Jaishankar’s recent comments reveal the government’s timidity when it comes to China. India has to devise a strategy to deal with a more powerful China, not cede to its hegemony

Last month, Australia-based Lowy Institute put out its 2023 edition of the Asia Power Index. It gives a score to the comprehensive power of each country, a weighted average across eight thematic measures of power: military capability and defence networks, economic capability and relationships, diplomatic and cultural influence, as well as resilience and future resources.

By defining power as the capacity of a state to direct or influence the behaviour of other states, non-state actors and the course of international events, the index measures the ability of countries to shape and respond to their external environment.
