  • Social media is flooded with videos of powerful flashes of mysterious of light in the sky just before the quake
  • Research shows that 80% of these recorded Earthquake Lights are linked to quakes of a magnitude of 5 or greater
  • The luminous lights can be seen from distances of up to 600 km from the epicentre of the quake
  • Some say when certain impurities in rock crystals are put under mechanical stress they break apart and generate electricity
  • It is agreed that a whole range of phenomenon including lights, sounds and even animal reactions are probably caused by electromagnetic effects
  • But for now, this is the darkest area of seismology. Not much is known about it due to lack of enough studies

Shortly before an earthquake devastated Morocco recently, blue flashlights lit up the sky. Inexplicable cracking sounds resounded along with those of buildings crashing down.

Even as the North African country was trying to limp back to normalcy after about 3,000 deaths, social media was flooded with videos showing powerful flashes of light just before the shaking. While some explained that the strange lights in the sky were due to exploding transformers, others countered that although some transformers did explode, the lights in the sky were due to a natural phenomenon. A Spanish post said it was something called Triboluminescence. Another user alluded it to a US military project carried out years ago in which, he said, only ionosphere and telecommunications were studied.
