UP’s treatment of Lallu exposes BJP’s anti-poor mindset: Rahul Gandhi

LUCKNOW: Former congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday joined the chorus in slamming the BJP led Uttar Pradesh government over arrest of state president Ajay Kumar Lallu. Stating that the UP government was unnecessarily keeping Lallu in jail, Rahul said that the turn of events exposes Yogi government’s anti-poor mindset.

“I have seen the struggle of UPCC President

Shri Ajay Kumar Lallu Ji

closely. He was active day and night in helping the needy at the time of disaster. The UP government is doing injustice to him keeping him in jail. The government action exposes the anti-poor mentality of the government,” Rahul tweeted.

Lallu was arrested on May 20 on allegations that he provided false documents regarding buses for ferrying

migrant workers

back to Uttar Pradesh during the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. A special court on Saturday adjourned the hearing on Lallu''s bail plea till June 1 after the prosecution submitted that the investigation was ongoing.

Congress legislative party leader Aradhana Mishra Mona wrote to speaker of the Vidhan Sabha narrating the entire course of events behind Lallu’s arrest. “I am trying to meet Lallu ji in jail but have failed despite repeated efforts,” she wrote to him urging him to interfere in the matter so that Lallu may be granted bail.

“The kind of treatment given to a two-time MLA is below standards of humanity and dignity. Please intervene in the interest of democracy,” he stated.

Meanwhile, congress workers in different parts of the state are staging demonstrations to press for Lallu’s release as per instructions from party national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi.

On Saturday, a section of supporters organized a havan for divine intervention and change of heart of the ruling BJP government officials. In Basti, district unit workers took to

jal satyagrah

to demand for the release of their president.

However voices that the grand old party was not doing enough to get him out of the jail are also being heard.
