The Palace on Wheels

The Palace on Wheels, which debuted in 1982, is a symbol of opulent train travel in India. Travelling through Rajasthan and Agra, this train transports travellers to a bygone period of regal living. Activities include sundowners on the sand dunes, camel safaris, and visits to the castles and historic forts of Rajasthan. The 41 cabins in its 14-coach train, which is named after one of the old princely kingdoms of Rajasthan, have panoramic windows, plush carpets, ceiling frescoes, mahogany panelling, and attached bathrooms. One notable bonus for the two "super deluxe" accommodations is a private vehicle and tour guide.

Italian, Continental, and Indian food are served in the train's two dining cars, while a separate bar serves mixed drinks. Itinerary: an eight-day tour of northwest India, which takes in the “Golden Triangle” of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

The Golden Chariot

Across South India, the Golden Chariot was introduced in 2008 and passes via temples, safaris, sun-kissed beaches, hills covered in jungle, and historic cities. There are eighteen purple and gold carriages on it, all named after south Indian dynasties. Each cabin has a smart TV, Wi-Fi, an attendant, and an ensuite bathroom.

In addition to two dining cars serving both local and international cuisine, the train's lounge bar, Madira, has Mysore Palace-inspired décor. Along with traditional Indian and contemporary massage techniques, the spa has a workout room. Bengaluru is the starting and finishing point of every journey.

3/5

Maharaja Express

Since its 2010 inauguration, the 23-carriage Maharajas' Express has won multiple accolades for its opulent interiors and customary Indian royal hospitality. In 14 guest cabins, travellers can select from four different accommodation categories. The Presidential Suite, with two bedrooms, a sitting area, and a bathtub-equipped bathroom, is the largest option.

Both meat eaters and vegans will enjoy the two restaurants on offer, Rang Mahal and Mayur Mahal, both of which have a peacock motif. Visitors can socialise over cocktails at the Safari Bar or choose the more sedate Rajah Lounge, where they can read or play games while admiring the scenery that passes by.

4/5

Deccan Odyssey

Operating since 2004, the Deccan Odyssey has the feel of a mobile hotel. A state-of-the-art conference room, spa, gift shop, gym and bar with mocktails and premium wines and spirits are among its twenty-one carriages. There are twelve sleeper compartments in the vehicles, complete with plush carpeting, private bathrooms, internet access, and DVD players in addition to personal butlers.

Another feature are the two onboard eateries, Waavar and Utsav, which serve cuisine unique to the areas the train travels through. Cultural encounters are also woven throughout the voyage. Passengers could be wine-tasting or going on a game drive one day, and appreciating ancient Indian architecture the next.

5/5

Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels transports you through the rich cultural legacy of Rajasthan, as its name appropriately implies. See the many magnificent castles and fortresses constructed in the Rajputana region, and immerse yourself in the chivalry and hospitality of the Rajput culture. You are welcomed with a lavish musical red carpet welcome and the kind of gracious hospitality that one associates with Rajasthani tradition as soon as you board the train.

With elegantly furnished interiors, historical Rajputana imagery, all the contemporary amenities of a five-star hotel, and fine-dining experiences with the most exquisite gems from the area, the private cabins are nothing less than regal homes.
