As the Omicron variant arrives in India, here’s a look at what the preliminary research suggests about this newest variant of concern and how the risk of infection that you face depends on the kind of population you are part of, specifically its vaccination status

The number of Omicron cases in the country is going up exponentially; from 5 to 21 cases overnight. Scientists and epidemiologists are still studying this variant to understand if it’s better or worse than the Delta variant, and what is the link between vaccination coverage and risk of infection. Even as we wait for answers, here’s what we do know about the risk from this latest Covid variant.

Where you live matters
Logic dictates that Omicron will hurt an inoculated population a lot less. Experts say that the vaccine will provide at least some protection against the Omicron variant because they stimulate not only antibodies but even the immune cells that can attack infected cells. Mutations to the spike protein do not blunt that immune cell response.
