The Rongkhang (ST) Assembly constituency in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district is set to get its first elected representative, with results of the recently held assembly election declared on Monday. The seat was created under the 2023 delimitation exercise and reserved for Scheduled Tribes.
The contest in this newly formed constituency has drawn attention, with the BJP fielding Tuliram Ronghang as its candidate under the NDA banner, while the Congress nominated Augustine Enghee. With no prior electoral history, Rongkhang presents a fresh political battleground.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the BJP registered a strong victory in the nearby Howraghat (ST) constituency, winning by a margin of over 31,000 votes and securing more than 55 per cent vote share.
Local issues have played a central role in shaping the electoral narrative in Rongkhang. The region has witnessed repeated tensions over land disputes, particularly involving evictions from grazing reserves. In addition to security concerns, voters have highlighted the need for better infrastructure, employment opportunities for tribal youth and stronger safeguards to protect indigenous Karbi land from encroachment.
