PATIALA: The tall claims of Patiala Municipal Corporation (PMC) were exposed yet again on Saturday when a brief spell of rain created flood-like situation in many parts of the city. The lack of drainage has created pools of dirty water which may prove to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and lead to epidemic outbreak if the corporation fails to take any immediate steps. Those going to the bus stand and railway station suffered the most as the stretch was waterlogged. The road towards the railway station from Rajpura was submerged. The locals had to take long routes to reach their destinations. The corporation doesn't have any proper system to drain out water immediately after the rain. "It's not for the first time such a situation emerged. It usually happens whenever there is rain. We have to live with it and don't hope any improvement as all our repeated requests during the last many years have fallen on deaf ears," said Malkiat singh, who runs a shop on Mall Road here. The blocking of some of the major city roads due to the shower caused the traffic to move at a snail's pace. The commuters had to encounter many gridlocks and traffic congestion reached its peak. Residents of Model Town, colonies on Rajpura Road, Chhoti Baradari, Twakali road bus stand, Nabha Gate and Sirhind Road faced inconvenience due to the failure of corporation in setting up proper sewerage system in the city. "In some areas, sewerage also starts leaking and gets mixed with rainwater. This water finds its way into houses and causes skin diseases. Locals have voiced their angst against this but there has been no improvement in the drainage system of the city," alleged another local Mukhtiar Singh. Assistant commissioner of corporation Nazar Singh said they have identified some trouble points where the waterlogging problem exists. "At some places, we have installed permanent sewerage pipes while at other places work is still underway," claimed the commissioner.
