NABHA: The working of prestigious Punjab Public School (PPS),
Nabha, has come under the scanner after the mother of a student approached Punjab and Haryana high court demanding access to her son.
She has alleged in her petition that her son, a class-IX student, has been kept in illegal detention by school authorities, while the latter have denied the allegations.
Baljit Kaur of Phillaur on August 27 had approached the high court and alleged that her son Sukhwinder Singh has been in the illegal detention of PPS authorities, who were not allowing her to meet her son.
The high court on August 1 directed the SDM and DSP Nabha to conduct an inquiry and sought a report. SDM Poonamdeep Kaur and DSP Rajwinder Singh went to the school on late Thursday night and Friday morning. "We met Sukhminder and other school authorities and would submit our report to the high court. I cannot disclose more as the matter is in the high court," said the SDM.
Some teachers said that Baljit had come to the school on August 22 to drop her other son, Gurjatinder Singh. But when she sought permission to take Sukhwinder to the market for some hours, the school authorities refused permission as it was against school rules. "But when we refused, Sukhwinder abused school teachers in front of his mother. When the school headmaster learnt about the incident, he ordered an inquiry," said officiating deputy headmaster Ravinder Singh Sodhi.
After finding the student at fault, the school authorities sent him home for a week as a punishment, but the parents allegedly refused to take him. "Our school staff came back with the student on the same night — August 22. As punishment for abusing the teachers, we held him in the medical room till August 28. He has been attending the classes from August 29 and there is no problem now," Sodhi said.
