PM Narendra Modi condemns Manipur video horror, says culprits will not be spared
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep shock and anguish over the harrowing video from Manipur. He strongly condemned the disturbing incident and reassured the nation that those responsible for such heinous acts would face the full force of the law.
"The video showing atrocity against women in Manipur is the most shameful. I’m pained and angered about the incident and I assure people of the country that guilty will not be spared and subjected to severest punishment," PM Modi said.
"The Manipur incident has shamed the entire humanity and 140 core people of the country are feeling shamed. Be it Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan or Manipur, dignity of women and girls is paramount and must of protected and I request chief ministers of all states to take strongest possible action against criminals involved in atrocity against women," PM Modi said in his address to media ahead of start of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
The video, which surfaced online on Wednesday, shows two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side. The widely circulated video also shows men constantly molesting the two women. According to Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, that incident happened in Kangpokpi district on May 4.
Several opposition MPs have given notices in Parliament demanding discussions on the situation in Manipur, arising from a fresh controversy as a video of two women being paraded naked surfaced and was widely circulated.
Meanwhile, the Centre has asked Twitter and other social media platforms to pull down the video of the two Manipur women paraded naked as the matter is under investigation.
Manipur has been witnessing violence since May 3, following the protests by the Kuki and Naga communities against the High Court's order asking the state government to consider the inclusion of Meitei community in the category of Scheduled Tribes (ST).
