Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years. Guyana is the final destination of the PM's three-nation tour, which included visits to Nigeria and Brazil for the G20 Summit.

On Thursday, PM Modi spoke at a special session of the Guyana Parliament, highlighting the deep-rooted historical ties between the two nations, built on "soil, sweat, and diligence."

Tribute at the Arya Samaj monument

Prime Minister also paid floral tribute at the Arya Samaj monument located close by. This monument was unveiled in 2011 in commemoration of 100 years of the Arya Samaj movement in Guyana.

'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Guyana President Dr Irfaan Ali planted a sapling under the 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam' initiative. PM also said that the "special gesture," marks the "shared commitment" towards sustainability.

PM participates in Ram Bhajan

On the second day of his visit, Prime Minister Modi attended a Ram Bhajan (devotional song) at Georgetown’s Promenade Garden, reflecting the deep cultural ties between India and Guyana. The event highlighted the strong Indian diaspora presence in Guyana and symbolized unity and shared cultural heritage.

PM also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's statue, marking the 21st time he has honored the Mahatma abroad. This reflects Modi’s commitment to keeping Gandhi's teachings alive globally through diplomatic engagements.

'Every nation matters'

In his special address, PM Modi emphasized, "Bharat says, every nation matters," highlighting that India views island nations not as small countries, but as important ocean nations. He arrived in Guyana on Wednesday and was later joined by Caribbean leaders for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.
