36-buildings set to undergo restoration
Under the masterplan unveiled by PM Modi in Sabarmati 36 existing buildings shall undergo restoration, out of which, 20 buildings including 'Hriday Kunj', which served as Gandhi's residence, will be conserved, 13 will undergo restoration, and 3 will be reproduced, the release stated.
Memorial to serve as an inspiration for generations
The memorial will serve as an inspiration for future generations, fostering Gandhian thoughts and will enliven the essence of Gandhian values, through a process informed by principles of Trusteeship.
Buildings to host interactive exhibits and activities
The masterplan includes new buildings to house administration facilities, visitor facilities like an orientation centre, interactive workshops on charkha spinning, handmade paper, cotton weaving and leatherwork and public utilities. The buildings will house interactive exhibits and activities to showcase aspects of Gandhiji's life as well as the legacy of the Ashram.
Library to safeguard Gandhiji's ideologies
The masterplan also includes the establishment of a library and archives structure dedicated to safeguarding, preserving, and sharing Gandhiji's ideologies. Additionally, it will offer amenities for visiting scholars to utilise the Ashram's library and archives.
Area to be expanded
The existing five-acre area of the Ashram will be expanded to 55 acres. The Kochrab Ashram was the first Ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi after coming to India from South Africa in 1915. It is still preserved as a memorial and tourist space by Gujarat Vidyapeeth.
'Bapu's ashram heritage for entire mankind'
"A country which does not cherish its heritage lose its future also. Bapu's Sabarmati Ashram is a heritage not only for the country, but for the entire mankind," PM Modi said.
Multi-language interpretation centre set-up
The project also enabled the creation of an interpretation centre that can guide visitors with different expectations and in multiple languages, making their experience culturally and intellectually more stimulating and enriching.

Project unveiled on anniversary of Gandhiji's Dandi Yatra
Modi launched the Rs 1,200 crore Gandhi Ashram Memorial masterplan at Sabarmati in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city and also inaugurated the redeveloped Kochrab ashram at a function on the anniversary of the famous Dandi Yatra, or salt march, taken out by Mahatma Gandhi on March 12, 1930.
