WAGAH: Pakistani MP Maulana Fazl-ur Rahman, who heads the pro-Taliban Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, arrived here on Tuesday morning.
He is here to meet members of the Indian branch of his group and press for peace between the two countries.
Rahman, who is leading a four-member delegation of his party, was received at the Wagah border by Maulana Mahmood Madani, the general secretary of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, which is sponsoring Rahman''s visit, had said earlier that the pro-Taliban leader would visit the Golden Temple and Chandigarh.
He will also visit an Islamic religious school before arriving in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. No events or meetings in the Indian capital have been confirmed, the group said. A reception was scheduled for Rahman in New Delhi on Friday.
"We will meet with Hindu and Sikh leaders and Ulema (Islamic clerics) in India. We will speak about peace between the two countries," the party spokesman was quoted as saying.
Rahman does not need a visa to travel in India because of an agreement among the seven countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation which exempts members of Parliament from acquiring visas.
