Migrant woman dies in Shimla, medical negligence alleged

Death of a 22-year-old migrant woman at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla on Friday has created controversy as Shimla based social organization Umang Foundation has alleged that woman died of medical negligence.

SHIMLA: Death of a 22-year-old migrant woman at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla on Friday has created controversy as Shimla based social organization Umang Foundation has alleged that woman died of medical negligence. Woman had undergone medical termination and family planning operation at Government Hospital in Solan on December 19 after which she developed complications resulting into her death. According to Ajay Shrivastava, chairman, Umang Foundation, Gulnaz (22) originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh was residing in Solan area for last two years where her husband Zaffar was working as carpenter with a contractor. He said on December 19, couple had gone to Government Hospital Solan for family planning operation as they were having two children having age of one and half years and two and half years.Ajay said at the hospital couple was informed by the doctor on duty that Gulnaz was pregnant and before undergoing family planning operation her pregnancy will have to be terminated. On the advise of doctor on December 19, medical termination and family planning operation was conducted and on same day Gulnaz was discharged from the hospital.Ajay said immediately after the operation Gulnaz had developed health complications and on December 23 she was again operated and remained admitted at hospital for 2-3 days.
On seeing no improvement in her condition she was again shown to doctor at Government Hospital at Solan on January 7 after which she was referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital at Shimla. Ajay Shrivastava said that he has written a letter to chief minister Virbhadra Singh as woman was not treated properly at Government Hospital Solan where she developed complications. He demanded that proper investigation should be done and doctor found involved in medical negligence should be punished. According to Dr Ramesh Sharma, Senior Medical Superintendent, Indira Gandhi Medical College, the woman was admitted at Kamla Nehru Hospital on January 7 where puss from her body was drained. He said that woman was kept on ventilator at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital where she died on Friday morning.
