6.6 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan, strong tremors felt across Delhi-NCR

NEW DELHI: Strong tremors that lasted several minutes were felt across northern India as a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit northern Afghanistan late on Tuesday.

Panic-stricken people rushed out of buildings as the earthquake struck around 10.20 pm and tremors were felt across parts of north India including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.


"I was sitting on the sofa and talking to my son when everything started shaking. I raised an alarm. Everyone rushed out ... we felt very strong tremors," said a Delhi resident.

A Noida resident said he first noticed the dining table shaking. "Soon after we saw that the fans were also shaking. The earthquake was strong in terms of intensity and stayed for a longer period," the resident said.

There was no immediate report of any loss of life or property.

The earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region near the remote northern Afghan province of Badakhshan. The quake was at a depth of around 180 km.

Initial magnitude and depth figures varied across various monitoring stations.

Large parts of South Asia are seismically active because a tectonic plate known as the Indian plate is pushing north into the Eurasian plate.
