'Digital gallery dedicated to 60k workers who built new Parliament'
NEW DELHI: The new Parliament building has a 'digital gallery' dedicated to the 60,000 workers who were involved in construction of the massive project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday. He added that with this, their contribution in the project had been "immortalised".
Addressing the inaugural function of the new Parliament building, the PM said, "Nearly 60,000 labourers got employment in this Parliament House project. They have sweated to construct this building. I am happy that a digital gallery has been put up in the new building. This is perhaps the first-of-its-kind in the world. Now, their contribution in the construction of the Parliament building has been immortalised."
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and and Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh lauded the contribution of construction workers in completing the project in less than two-and-a-half years despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Sunday, Modi honoured 11 construction workers involved in the project after the 'sengol' handover ceremony. He felicitated the workers with traditional shawls and handed over mementoes.
The workers who were felicitated by the PM included Satya Ranjan Das from West Bengal's Sundarbans. Modi also felicitated Bhai Ram Murmu from Jharkhand who was responsible for cleanliness, and Ejaz Ahmed, a supervisor in the project. Puranjan Dalai of Chandipur in Odisha, who was involved in arranging tea and water for the massive workforce, was also honoured.
Others included Kishanlal from Barmer in Rajasthan, Devlal from Vadodara in Gujarat and Anil Kumar Yadav from Bihar, who fixed sandstone on the outer wall of the building. On such worker from Delhi, Dharmendra, who was involved in gas welding works for nearly two years, was also felicitated. The three others were Subrata Sutradhar (North East), Muzaffar Khan (Jharkhand) and Anand Vishwakarma (Varanasi). tnn
