NEW DELHI: In the Mehrauli assembly constituency, where BJP’s Gajender Singh Yadav secured victory with 45,000 votes, independent candidate Balyogi Baba Balaknath made a mark by garnering 9,667 votes, finishing ahead of Congress candidate Pushpa Singh who secured only 9053 votes.

Despite running without the backing of a major political party, Balaknath, a 34-year-old religious priest, managed to outperform the Congress nominee, who received 9,053 votes. Meanwhile, AAP’s Mahender Chaudhary emerged as the runner-up with 45,627 votes, trailing the BJP winner by just 482 votes.

Balaknath, who holds a 12th-pass qualification and declared assets worth Rs 39.1 lakh, contested as an independent and had no criminal cases against him.

According to financial disclosures, Balaknath has declared assets worth Rs 33.47 lakh in an account at Indian Bank, Katwaria Sarai, making it his largest financial holding. Additionally, he has deposits in the Central Bank of India, with an account balance of Rs 10,637.

Apart from his bank accounts, Balaknath has two fixed deposits (FDs), both valued at Rs 13,422
