Delhi government on Saturday reduced the number of containment zones from 715 to 496 following extensive assessment of the sealed areas in the last two days. “As desired by the chief minister, all the containment zones in the city were reviewed in the last two days with each district magistrate and surveillance team,” revenue minister Kailash Gahlot said.

The Union Territory on Saturday recorded 613 COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths, taking the total cases in the Union Territory to 20,972.

China reported 49 cases of the new coronavirus in the mainland for Aug. 1, up from 45 cases a day earlier, the health commission said on Sunday. Of the new infections, 30 were in the far western region of Xinjiang, three were in the northeastern province of Liaoning, and the remaining 16 were imported cases, according to a statement by the National Health Commission.

The United States counted 61,262 new coronavirus cases in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 pm Saturday (0030 GMT Sunday), according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Jharkhand reported 738 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking the total number of cases to 12,104, said State Health Department.

The daily death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic in India crossed 800 for the first time, with 848 fatalities being reported on Saturday, 322 of these in Maharashtra alone, even as the country recorded nearly 56,000 fresh cases, the second-highest single-day count so far.

South Africa on Saturday surpassed 500,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, representing more than 50% of all reported coronavirus infections in Africa's 54 countries. Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize announced 10,107 new cases Saturday night, bringing the country's cumulative total to 503,290, including 8,153 deaths. South Africa, with a population of about 58 million, has the fifth-highest number of cases in the world, behind the U.S., Brazil, Russia and India, all countries with significantly higher populations.
