Burwan election results 2026: TMC's Pratima Rajak loses to BJP's Sukhen Kumar Bagdi by more than 22,000 votes

NEW DELHI: TMC's Pratima lost to BJP's Sukhen Kumar Bagdi for the constituency of Burwan in the 2026 assembly elections.There were a total of 2,14,003 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election in Burwan Assembly constituency, of whom 1,11,612 were male, 1,02,386 female and 5 belonged to the third gender.West Bengal voted across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recording a combined turnout of nearly 93 per cent — the highest since Independence and one of the largest in Indian electoral history. Notably, the surge was not limited to rural strongholds but saw a dramatic rise in urban centres, with women voters outpacing men to drive the record participation.Burwan, one of West Bengal's 294 Assembly constituencies, is located in Murshidabad district and forms part of the Baharampur Lok Sabha seat. Reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, the constituency has witnessed competitive electoral contests and shifts in political control in recent Assembly elections.In the 2021 Assembly election, the constituency had 217,500 registered electors, of whom 176,803 cast valid votes. The seat was won by All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate Jiban Krishna Saha, who secured 81,890 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Amiya Kumar Das finished a close second with 79,141 votes, trailing by a narrow margin of 2,749 votes.In the 2016 Assembly poll, Burwan recorded a voter turnout of 78.03 percent from an electorate of 194,415. Of the 151,550 valid votes cast, Indian National Congress candidate Protima Rajak emerged victorious with 55,906 votes. AITC nominee Shasthi Charan Mal came second with 40,904 votes, losing by 15,002 votes.The electoral record points to a political shift in Burwan, moving from Congress representation in 2016 to a tightly contested Trinamool Congress victory in 2021.
