After entering politics, BSY always spelled his name as Yediyurappa. But in 2007, after he became CM, the secretariat issued a statement saying the 'i' would be dropped and a 'd' would be added instead. The result: Yeddyurappa. The change was apparently carried out on the advice of numerologists. Sections of the media started shortening the name to Yeddy and this prompted suggestions for another change as the word "yeddy" is believed to be carrying unfavourable connotations. Some aides said he could be addressed as BSY.

According to people close to him, he was later advised to use only one spelling to avoid confusion in paperwork for bank accounts and Aadhaar. BSY then switched back to Yediyurappa.
