Most Indians only want to adopt ‘young and healthy’ kids but a few couples have decided to open their hearts and homes to older children and those with special needs
‘At first she would recoil from us, so the first kiss was very special’

Adopted Kiara, special needs kid
On December 31, Shefali Naidu shared a post about her ‘best moment of 2021’ on Facebook. “I will forever cherish the little hug and the wet sloppy kiss I got that day,” wrote the 34-year-old writer-mom. Naidu was writing about being kissed by her 14-month-old daughter Kiara who she and her husband Karthikbabu Narayanasamy adopted in November. Kiara had been in an institution since her birth and was not accustomed to human touch. She would recoil each time they tried to hug or kiss her. But a few days before New Year's Eve, the little one clutched her mamma’s T-shirt when she was putting her down in the crib, and planted a kiss on her cheek. Kiara now showers love on her older sister Shaina — their eight-year-old biological daughter — and papa, too.
