SANGRUR: A 16-year-old boy got a new lease of life after good samaritans from his village joined hands with school teachers to collect money for his kidney transplant that was successfully done on Saturday.
The son of differently-abled Kaka Singh, Bikkar Singh, of Retgarh village, suffered renal failure in October 2010. A student of Class VIII at government school of Kapial village, Bikkar was taken to PGI, Chandigarh, where treatment failed to improve his health.
His mother, Balbir Kaur, who is a domestic helper, admitted Bikkar in a private hospital in Mohali for dialysis but was forced to discontinue after her meagre savings got exhausted.

They agreed and collected Rs 1.20 lakh in some days. ?Every teacher we approached contributed immensely,? said Kuldeep Bassi, science teacher at Gobindgarh Khokhar village who got involved in the move.
Meanwhile, Balbir Kaur too had collected about Rs 1 lakh from villagers on loan. Kaka Singh had cross-matched to donate kidney. The teacher community got the boy to hospital and the kidney was successfully transplanted on Saturday.
Thanking those who had come forward to help them, Balbir Kaur and Kaka Singh said they held no grudges against the government for its failure to provide any assistance .
