Young pacer Shivam Mavi made a memorable debut after Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel led a remarkable recovery with their unbeaten 68-run stand as India survived anxious moments to clinch a nail-biting two-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I on Tuesday.


Debutant pacer Mavi led an inspired bowling performance with four wickets but he wasn’t supported at the other end by the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Harshal Patel. Both Chahal and Patel have now been failing regularly in international matches.

Going ahead, India's new T20I captain Hardik Pandya is eager to see how his team tackles difficult situations as he seeks to mould it into an outfit capable of ending the country's barren run in world events.


Pandya also backed his decision of giving the final over to Axar Patel as India needed to defend the 13 runs. "We might lose a game here and there but it's alright. It's the young guys who got us back into the game."

Fans, however, mocked Patel and Chahal for doing the best they could to make Lanka win.
